If you feel you have an emergency outside of our standard working hours we recommend that you utilize one of Melbourne’s specialized 24 hour veterinary hospitals that are fully staffed overnight.
The nearest centres are the AEC facilities in Moorabbin, Frankston, Hallam or Mount Waverley
Please don’t hesitate to telephone us if you have any concerns about your pet. We are here to help and more than happy to give advice over the phone. However, if you are worried that your animal is unwell, a consultation with a veterinarian for a full clinical examination and discussion is always the ideal option.
Having your animal sedated or anaesthetised is often a routine part of veterinary investigations and treatment, and we make every effort to keep that experience as safe and worry-free as possible for both you and your pet. Our hospital utilizes many of the same pieces of equipment used in human hospitals, from state-of-the-art gaseous anaesthetic machines, to modern blood pressure, breathing, and heart monitors. However, the most important fact is that all our procedures are closely monitored by both the veterinarian overseeing the case, as well as fully trained veterinary nurses.
The hospital boasts both a designated sterile operating theatre as well as a separate work station for minor procedures. We have the equipment and experience on hand to perform a high standard of general surgery from desexings and tumour removals, to more complicated liver, bowel or urinary tract operations.
A cryosurgery unit is also available for smaller skin masses, and is of particular use in early treatment of sun-related carcinomas on the white noses of cats.
Our compressed-air dentistry unit allows us to provide an exceptional level of dental care for all types of pet. The ultrasonic descaler and polisher soon bring dirty teeth back to being shining and white, whilst the high-speed dental burr means diseased teeth can be extracted efficiently with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue.
Investigations for unwell animals are often helped by varying imaging techniques, the majority of which are available on-site at the hospital.
We currently use a state of the art Digital Radiology (DR) unit to produce near instant excellent quality radiographs everytime. Whether we are looking for a fractured bone in a rabbit, or an intestinal foreign body inside a St Bernard, radiographs soon provide the answer.
The softer tissues inside the body are often better visualized using ultrasonography. Our human standard machine can provide informative images of all internal organs, from the heart through to the liver, spleen and bladder.
A flexible endoscope may be passed down the oesophagus and used to examine the lining of the stomach and intestine without the need for more invasive surgery. Biopsies can also be taken at the time of exam, and we have even managed to remove a razor blade from a dog’s stomach using a magnet!
An ECG machine monitors the electrical activity of the heart. Our hospital has two units, one that can be used to monitor patients under anaesthesia, and another which produces a trace reading to help diagnose abnormalities associated with cardiac rate or rhythm.
The hospital is well equipped with modern laboratory machinery allowing blood tests to be analysed on the spot when really needed. We also have twice daily courier access to one of Australia’s top veterinary pathology laboratories, meaning our patients never have long to wait for the results from more complex investigations.
Our secure cages all have under-floor heating making any length of stay at the hospital more than comfortable. The main ward has been especially designed so that staff can clearly see to the back of any cage, whilst the inpatients don’t overlook each other, greatly reducing unwanted stresses whilst in hospital. We even have a separate isolation ward to keep animals with potentially infectious diseases away from more routine cases.
We regularly work very closely with a number of recognized veterinary specialists in order to reach the best possible outcome for your pet. Melbourne has an ever increasing number of specialist services available including ophthalmology, dentistry, dermatology, CT & MRI scanning, oncology, cardiology, internal medicine, and surgery.
Mentone Veterinary Hospital is a proud member of the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM). This organization has been formed to help cats all over the world by linking veterinary professionals from Australia, America, the UK and many other countries. Our membership helps to keep us completely up to date with all aspects of feline health and welfare.

We carry a full range of Royal Canin, and Hills Science Diet foods, and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to help you find the ideal diet for your pet.
Prevention of parasitic infections in our animals continues to be a very important part of keeping pets healthy. Nowadays there is such a wide range of flea treatments, worm tablets, and heartworm medications that the choice can soon become overwhelming. Appropriate veterinary advice can often help.
We also have a very well stocked shop area with a wide selection of animal care products, from collars and leads to grooming equipment, beds, treats and toys. If we don’t have exactly what you are after on the shelf, the nursing staff are always happy to help out if we can.
A hydrobath is available for clients to use for a highly effective all over wash for any size dog. Telephone bookings are advised, especially at weekends when the bath can be particularly popular.
We run regular Puppy schools at the hospital on Wednesday evenings. The course is run by one of our experienced and puppy-loving vets, Rebecca. You can contact the clinic on 95834660 for more information. The puppy classes are currently on standby until we can resume normal sessions once COVID-19 lockdowns are lifted.
Over four weeks the classes cover …
There is also plenty of time for the puppies to socialise with each other whilst at the clinic.
A microchip is a small device that can be implanted in between your pets’ shoulder blades. It holds a unique 15 digit number and permanently identifies your animal as yours. It can literally be a life-saver if your pet gets lost, and the local authorities have now made it compulsory for all dogs and cats to be microchipped when first registered with the council. All our veterinarians are registered microchip implanters within the state of Victoria.
